From year 1 all students are allocated an advisor who is available year round to provide any academic, administrative and pastoral advice and support that the advisees might need. Students keep the same advisor for the three years of study and meet them online three times per semester for advising group sessions. Students can also access 1-2-1 advising support either through weekly drop in sessions or by requesting an appointment during working hours. This can be online or face to face, at the student’s preference. Advisors will also be available to write reference letters for employers or for further studies.
SBM Academic Skills Support is delivered by specialist tutors in the Engagement team, who provide Academic Writing Skills and Quantitative Research Skills support.
Our students’ voices are represented at all major decision-making committees concerned with academic delivery and the student experience within the School.
The Student Staff Liaison Committees are proactive fora for change, split by level of study (undergraduate) or by programme (postgraduate) to facilitate focused discussions and positive outcomes for our various cohorts. The committees meet twice a semester to ensure that there is an effective channel for formal communication between students and staff in each school or institute, through which students can reflect and give feedback on their programme of study as an integral part of QMUL’s systems and procedures for assuring academic standards and enhancing the student learning experience.
