I’m researching letters in twenty-first century novels: why do they persist in the digital age? What do they offer to the contemporary novel and its concerns, in the context of our changing experiences of time and media technologies?

My research draws on a combination of approaches to analyse letters’ properties, functions and contemporary significance in fiction: media archaeology, conceptual metaphor theory, narrative theory, and philosophical thinking about the trace, memory, time and inscription.
