Research Strategy

The Department of English at Queen Mary aims

  • to continue to develop areas where our research has been especially distinctive, at the highest level of international excellence
  • to embed English studies research in an interdisciplinary humanities context
  • to promote work across sub-disciplines within English studies, especially collaborations between researchers
  • to remain committed to lesser-studied but distinctive aspects of the discipline
  • to promote and encourage research-led teaching in the curriculum
  • to provide departmental support structures for research
  • to engage with users of our research in academia, education, and commercial and media enterprises, based on our distinctive view of English research
  • to foster collaboration with researchers in other countries and disseminate our research to the widest international audience
  • to attract high-quality research students and post-doctoral fellows who will undertake ambitious, ground-breaking research.

Our aims for 2021-2026 are:

  • to represent through our research a compelling public argument for the value of the Humanities in a conflicted world
  • to engage a wide range of partners, including non-governmental funders, artists, writers, and community groups, in order to increase the impact of our research
  • to implement QMUL’s ‘People, Culture, and Inclusion Enabling Plan’ (2020-2030) to support research and its impact; including strategies to address the impact of the Covid pandemic on the arts, career progression, and research culture, and especially its EDI implications, with investment and targeted support
  • to distribute investment in staff and research projects across the full historical and interdisciplinary range of English studies, including new research hubs for digital cultures and for creative and critical writing
  • to support colleagues to extend the reach and significance of their research
