Leana van der MerweAgainst interpretation: Feminist figurations in South African women’s fiction and contemporary visual art.Email: l.vandermerwe@qmul.ac.ukProfileTeachingSupervisionProfileMy research looks at texts (both literary and visual), by South African women, that can be described as both postcolonial and feminist. The focus of my research is a comparative and affective reading of these texts, through a consideration of a selection of themes or tropes which are identified in the selected texts. This is done within a framework of multiplicity and hybridity identified in the postcolonial settings in which these women find themselves, whilst simultaneously considering the complex intersection of race, class and gender in these contexts.Teaching I am a full time lecturer in Art History at the University of South Africa in Pretoria, where I teach various art history modules to undergraduates and supervise MVA as well as MA (Art History) students ResearchSupervision Prof Andrew van der Vlies
