Dissent and the Bible

On Saturday 23 May 2009 the Centre’s fifth one-day conference was held at Dr Williams’s Library on the subject of the reading, interpreting, and editing of the Bible by dissenting ministers and lay people from a range of denominations and affiliations, from the mid-seventeenth to the mid-nineteenth centuries.

The lectures were:

‘A Family Bible? The Henrys and Dissenting Readings of the Bible, 1650-1750’, by Scott Mandelbrote, Peterhouse, Cambridge

‘Scripture and Heterodoxy in the Writings of Lardner and Priestley’, by Simon Mills, Queen Mary

‘The Bible, Print and Nonconformity in Wales 1750-1850’, by Dr Eryn White, Aberystwyth

‘The Bible and Varieties of Nineteenth-Century Dissent: Elizabeth Fry, Mary Carpenter, and Catherine Booth’, by Professor Timothy Larsen, Wheaton College, Illinois
