The School of the Arts is one of the most academically diverse Schools in Queen Mary University of London.
We teach:
Because we are a single School, students have access to many programmes that cross-cut these subjects.
We also supervise Research Students and carry out a huge range of research projects across the disciplines in the School.
The Department of Comparative Literature and Culture offers insight into literature from all parts of the globe, as well as exploring connections between literature and other fields such as film and visual culture, geography and the environment, philosophy and political theory, music and childhood studies. Its multilingual faculty members are leaders in their field. Learning with the Department expands cultural and literary horizons.
Embedded within the heart of the East End’s creative hub, the Department of Film is one of the most prestigious UK centres for Media and Film Studies. As well as being home to academically acclaimed researchers, and hosting the Centre for Film and Ethics, the Department remains at the forefront of the field with its state-of-the-art facilities and visits from the most exciting filmmakers and thinkers of the day.
At the Language Centre, students are prepared for academic success through a multi-faceted approach to communication and language learning. In addition to our foundation and postgraduate diploma and summer pre-sessionals, we offer programmes in Modern Arabic, Mandarin Chinese, French, German, Japanese and Spanish, courses in academic English language and study skills, and applied linguistics. In increasing linguistic aptitude, the Language Centre’s work also increases employability and social mobility.
Situated within one of London’s most culturally and linguistically diverse areas, the Department of Linguistics explores our unique, human way of communicating through a diverse range of programmes. The Department sits at the intersection of academic excellence and public engagement. Not only is it ranked highly for research, but that work is also embedded in initiatives that see to support teachers, the city’s multilingual communities and the general public.
The Department of Modern Languages and Cultures is one of the most highly regarded in the UK for teaching, research and student satisfaction. Offering studies in Catalan, Chinese, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish and Russian, the Department rigorously implements social, philosophical, cultural, political, and linguistic enquiry into each of these programmes.
Both a single and richly varied entity, our School’s work has a global reach. We foster an environment that supports and enables thinking across national, linguistic and cultural boundaries on a range of topics that relate to the literary, the visual, the social and much more. In doing so, true to the Queen Mary spirit, the collision of different disciplines and minds leads to the previously unthinkable.
