Centre for Childhood Cultures: Children's Literature, Children's Lives A Children's History of Country Houses and Empire

Colonial Countryside is a child-led history and writing project which seeks to make country houses' colonial links widely known.

In this talk, Professor Corinne Fowler discusses children's encounters with history and their reshaping of it with a Colonial Countryside pupil from Birmingham.

Together they discuss what this history is, why it matters and what impact it had on the children who participated.

 

Professor Corinne Fowler lectures in the School of Arts at the University of Leicester and is author of Green Unpleasant Land: Creative Responses to Rural England's Colonial Countryside (Peepal Tree Press, November 2020).

XasQ is a secondary school pupil in South Birmingham.

She has researched India's colonial history and spoke about her experience of the Colonial Countryside project at the British Museum annual conference in 2019.
