Dr Daniel Mann

Mann's work in writing and filmmaking examines the material conditions of media production in the context of settler colonialism, civil conflict, and climate crisis, and explores how film constructs and shapes political, geographical and environmental imaginations.

Mann is currently a Fellow at the Institute for Humanities and Social science (IHSS) at QMUL. During the fellowship, he is developing a long-term project on land and territory as a resource for screen-based industries. This new project continues Mann's work on the use of desert environments as “extractive zones” for big-budget cinema; a project developed during his Leverhulme Early Career Fellowship at King's College London.

Mann's first book, Occupying Habits: Everyday Media as Warfare in Israel-Palestine (Bloomsbury, 2022), asks what happens when IDF soldiers film their routine of policing in Palestine, when war is domesticated and when security permeates all domains of life in Israel-Palestine. His articles and essays were published in journals such as Media, Culture & Society, Screen, Social Text, Media+Environment, World Records, and Afterimage. 

Mann's films have been screened internationally at film festivals and venues such as The Berlin Film Festival, The Rotterdam Film Festival, Cinema du Reel, The Hong Kong Film Festival, Cinemed, FID Marseille, New Horizons, Jerusalem Film Festival, Docaviv, Sonic Acts, RIDM, EFAM and the ICA in London. He is currently a resident at the Camargo Foundation in France, developing his new feature film titled "Special Effects" (2023). 

Mann received his PhD from the Media Department and the Centre for Research Architecture at Goldsmiths College, London, and held a postdoctoral position as a Leverhulme Fellow at the Film Studies Department at King’s College London.
