Note: Principles of Academic Writing 1 is offered in semester 1 and Principles of Academic Writing 2 is offered in semester 2.
The EAL 4621 Principles of Academic Writing 1 is a 10-week module consisting of workshops and tutorials, designed to give you a hands-on experience and individualised support. The module offers an in-depth introduction to different types of academic texts commonly used for assessment, such as an essay, report, annotated bibliography or literature review. You will study how to structure your writing, compile effective paragraphs, draw on various rhetorical tools to impress your readers, synthesise sources, include literature to support your claims and use online referencing tools.

The EAL 4622 Principles of Academic Writing 2 is 10-week module is taught through workshops and tutorials, offering a hands-on study experience and personalised support. The module starts with a brief overview of key academic genres and then focuses on features of academic style. You will study different techniques of expressing your ideas with concision, precision, clarity and ethical integrity. You will learn to communicate with a confident academic voice, while presenting texts written in a consistent register and with a clear appeal to different types of audiences.
