Why did you study Linguistics/English Language at Queen Mary? Did you have a particular career path in mind?
I chose to study Linguistics and English Language at Queen Mary University because I've always been interested in language, growing up bilingual. The course at Queen Mary caught my eye with its mix of hands-on learning and in-depth theoretical knowledge, which was exactly what I was looking for.
Being bilingual from a young age, I've been fascinated by how people acquire language, and that curiosity led me to explore linguistics further in an academic setting. Queen Mary's stellar reputation in linguistics and the lively, multicultural atmosphere on campus made the decision easy.
When I started, I didn't have a clear career plan, but I knew the versatile skills from this program would open various opportunities. The courses at Queen Mary allowed me to dive into different aspects of language, especially those related to bilingualism and language acquisition. This exploration deepened my passion for phonetics/language acquisition shaping my career choices after graduation
What topics did you like learning about and was there anything that surprised you in your studies?
I thoroughly enjoyed delving into the intricate worlds of phonetics and phonology during my studies at Queen Mary University. Exploring the sounds and patterns of language, especially how they vary across different languages, was particularly fascinating to me. The nuanced nature of phonetics and phonology allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the mechanics of language.
One module that stood out for me was 'Unfamiliar Languages.' The challenge of decoding and understanding languages I hadn't encountered before was incredibly rewarding. It not only broadened my linguistic horizons but also sparked a curiosity for the diversity of languages and their structures.
Throughout my studies, I was pleasantly surprised by the interconnectedness of linguistics. The dynamic nature of language and its impact on communication, culture, and society became increasingly apparent to me, adding an extra layer of richness to my academic journey.
Can you describe your career path to date and touch on your current role? How did you arrive in your current role?
My journey post-graduation has been quite the ride, graduating during the pandemic made securing a job rather difficult. After continuous searching and applying, I was able to secure an internship with 10K Black Interns scheme, leading me to where I am today as an PR (public relations) Account Executive at Edelman working on the Microsoft account.
Starting out in the consumer team, I got a taste of the PR landscape, learning the ropes and putting my linguistic skills to work in crafting compelling narratives and pitches. Last year, I transitioned onto the commercial and corporate teams, I found my stride, combining my love for language with a knack for corporate communication.
How do you describe the skills and knowledge you gained during your Linguistics/English Language degree to your employers?
I initially describe it as learning the science behind language, and then highlight the transferable skills I've developed through my degree, such as research, analytical abilities, critical thinking, and writing skills. It's beneficial to provide concrete examples of my past work to elucidate Linguistics for employers, considering that many may not be familiar with the field.
Can you describe what a typical working day looks like for you?
My typical working day kicks off with diving into my inbox, sifting through emails to stay updated on any urgent matters or new developments. One of my initial tasks is generating our morning report, which involves a thorough review of overnight tech coverage. I focus on identifying mentions of new products, regulatory changes, and any negative threads related to Microsoft or one of our main competitors.
After completing the morning report, I transition to my main tasks for the day. This can encompass a wide range of activities, from drafting detailed Q&A documents to crafting impactful bylines that are attributable to key stakeholders. I also dedicate time to developing pitches and liaising with the media, fostering relationships and ensuring our narratives align with current trends and interests.
A significant part of my day involves brainstorming new stories and angles that can be pitched to the media. This creative process is crucial for maintaining a fresh and engaging narrative, and it allows me to stay proactive in shaping our public relations strategy.
Throughout the day, I engage in collaborative sessions, working closely with my team to align our efforts and ensure a cohesive approach to our communication goals. Adapting to the dynamic nature of PR, I remain flexible and ready to address any emerging priorities or unexpected challenges.
What are your career plans for the future/Are you looking to expand your skill set in anything?
As I look to the future, my primary goal is to continue growing and excelling in my current role. In terms of skill development, I am particularly interested in expanding my proficiency in coding.
How did our degree prepare you for your current job role? Which skills that you developed during your degree have you brought to your current job?
My degree has proven to be a cornerstone in shaping my professional journey in PR. The skills and knowledge acquired during my studies have been instrumental in navigating the multifaceted world of communication. Firstly, my degree honed my analytical and critical thinking skills. The rigorous linguistic analysis required in my coursework has translated seamlessly into the ability to dissect complex issues, identify key messages, and develop strategic communication plans. This skill set has been particularly valuable in my role as an Account Executive, where crafting compelling narratives and understanding diverse communication styles is paramount.
Moreover, the linguistic and cultural sensitivity cultivated during my studies has been an asset in navigating the diverse landscapes of PR. Understanding how language shapes perceptions and influences interactions has been key in tailoring communication strategies that resonate with various audiences.
My degree also fostered a strong foundation in research and the ability to delve deep into unfamiliar topics—an invaluable skill in the ever-evolving field of PR. The curiosity instilled through linguistic studies has fuelled my approach to staying informed and adapting to the dynamic nature of the industry.

My advice to current students and recent graduates would be to embrace a mindset of continuous learning and adaptability. My time at Queen Mary was truly special. One highlight was my role as a Student Ambassador, where I had the chance to engage with prospective students, sharing my enthusiasm for the course. The opportunity to speak with others about the program and contribute to their decision-making process was not only rewarding but also allowed me to connect with the university community in a meaningful way. Another standout aspect was the strong sense of community at Queen Mary. Whether in lectures, group projects, or extracurricular activities, the collaborative spirit among students and faculty created a supportive and inclusive environment. This sense of belonging made my academic journey more enriching and memorable.
