French

Find out how you can study French as part of our new BA in Modern Languages.

In the 2018 National Student Survey, French at QMUL was ranked top in London for overall student satisfaction.

To complement their academic development, students of French are encouraged to put their language skills into practice through a lively programme of social activities. These include a fortnightly cinéclub, cafés philosophiques, and an end-of-year student show.

Our students run a French-language webzine, l’Hex.

Since 2015 our language teachers have run a debating club, which enables first- and second-year students to acquire the skills to debate cultural and political topics in French. In 2016 our team won the joutes oratoires, a national student debating competition organised by Franco-British Connections in collaboration with the Institut français du Royaume-Uni.

You can also keep up to date with French activities, at QMUL and elsewhere, by signing up to our blog.

What our students say

‘The insight that I got into literature, history, philosophy and art from modules including Out of Place: Literature and Dislocation and French Feminist Writing inspires me until this day. Comparing texts, ideas and theories gave me the analytical skills that I use every day to find and write interesting news stories [in my job as a journalist]. It also helped that all my lecturers were always incredibly helpful and so understanding.’
