From the regions of Spain to the diverse countries of Latin America, the programme in Hispanic Studies covers a wide range of subjects. You will be able to learn about the history, politics, sport, literature and film of several nations. As the second most widely spoken language in the world, Spanish at QMUL is considered an important tool for communication and analysis.
As well as acquiring a high level of written and oral competence in Spanish, you will have the opportunity (should you wish) to study Catalan or Portuguese, thereby allowing you direct access to other rich cultures.
You’ll spend part of your third year studying or working in a Spanish-speaking country. This gives you an exceptional opportunity to develop your language skills through immersion and boost your intercultural competence.
The 2017 National Student Survey gave 100% overall student satisfaction for Iberian Studies at Queen Mary (which includes Catalan, Portuguese and Spanish). This made it joint top in the UK.
In the 2018 National Student Survey, students gave us 97.1% which put Queen Mary first in the Russell Group for this subject.
