With researchers working across the social sciences, humanities and beyond, we are ideally placed to respond to today’s interdisciplinary research agenda. Disciplinary range and richness is at the heart of the school’s research and we are home to a range of interdisciplinary centres and other initiatives spanning the Faculty and wider university.

In the last Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021), an assessment of research quality across UK universities, two of our three units of assessment (Linguistics and Film) were ranked first for their research outputs.

Attracting substantial external grants and investment from a variety of funding bodies in the UK and beyond, research undertaken in the school is tackling and having a tangible impact upon some of the most pressing real-world challenges. Projects are exploring issues including: neurodiversity, accent bias, access to cultural production and the risks and benefits of social media. Collaboration is embedded throughout the lifecycle of our research and our major external partners and stakeholders include Google, London Symphony Orchestra, Autistica, BFI, and Barbican. Researchers at all career stages are also skilled communicators of their findings.

We support a flourishing postgraduate and postdoctoral community which enriches our research culture. We are fully committed to diversity in the research we undertake and the ways in which we work. We strive for an inclusive research culture underpinned by ethical integrity.
