Funding at CCMP

Funding of PhD projects within CCMMP

We benefit from a variety of funding sources. More information about postgraduate research studentships can be found here. The full list of international studentships can be found here.

1. EPSRC studentship. Depending on funding each year, CCMMP has an EPSRC studentship. There are eligibility criteria which are concerned with residency within the UK, and that candidates should have obtained a first degree to upper second class level.  Deadline for applying is 29th January 2025.

2. College studentship. These are similar to EPSRC studentships except that there is no residency requirement and typically provide half of the total funding. The other half is sought from external sources such as industry. Deadline for applying is 29th January 2025.

3.  S&E Doctoral Research Studentships for Underrepresented Groups 2025/26:  The Queen Mary Faculty of Science and Engineering and the Doctoral College is inviting applications for Doctoral Research Studentships from UK candidates from underrepresented groups (e.g., Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic) in research in the UK.

Up to 6 PhD studentships will be awarded on the basis of the excellence of the applicant. Awards are tenable for up to 3.5 years, and cover tuition fees and a maintenance stipend at the UKRI London rate (c.£21,237 p.a. full-time, £10,619 part-time; 2025/26 rates tbc).

You must be a UK permanent resident from an underrepresented group in research, e.g., Black, Asian and other Minority Ethnic, with the priority for this round given to those from Black origin, and eligible to pay home student fees. Further details can be found here: S&E Doctoral Research Studentships for Underrepresented Groups 2025/26 [PDF 374KB]Expected start date: 01 September 2025. Deadline for applying is 29th January 2025.

4. China Scholarship Council. For Chinese candidates, the college offers a fee-waiver scheme with stipends provided by the China Scholarship Council. This is a mature scheme which the CCMMP has been successfully using to recruit the brightest students from China. See the CSC flyer at the bottom of this page.
QMUL is one of the largest hosts of CSC students in the UK, and our group is one of the largest recipients of CSC students in QMUL recruiting up to 10 students annually.  Deadline for applying is 29th January 2025.

6. Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan and Queen Mary PhD Scholarships. The scholarships will pay full overseas tuition fees and provide a stipend of £9000 to contribute towards the scholar’s living costs. More details are available here and on the HEC website.

7. Merit Scholarship Programme for High Technology funded by the Islamic Development Bank. This scheme funds up to 3½ years of PhD study for candidates from across a range of Muslim-majority nations across the world. More details are available here.

8. Government agency and industry funding. Some of our projects are wholly or partly funded by government agencies or industry. For example, some of our students are part-funded by the ISIS neutron and muon facility and the UK Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. When part funded, college funds are used to supplement the external funding. Such projects are usually co-supervised or mentored by the external partner.

9. European Union funding. Some projects are tied to specific EU projects, and will be advertised as such. It is also possible for prospective EU non-UK students to apply for EU funding in their own right, and in such cases you are advised to speak early to the project supervisor.
