Extra Curricular Activities for School Students

We organise a number of events and activities for school students outside of the school environment. In addition we have a variety of content on our YouTube channel.

Please note that we are unable to offer individual work experience placements with researchers to students of any age. This is due to the advanced nature of our research, requiring many years of training, meaning it is not possible for us to provide realistic and beneficial work experience opportunities.

Independent Research Projects

Small groups of students and individuals are able to sign up to projects in our Physics Research in Schools Environments (PRiSE) programme independent of their teacher. The programme is a great way to engage with exciting research projects in collaboration with Queen Mary University of London over a sustained period of time. We run these projects over the first two terms of the academic year.

Girls into Physics Summer School

The Girls into Physics summer school is a free, non-residential summer school for aspiring physicists in Year 10. The programme takes place in July each year.

Particle Physics Summer School

A free three-day residential course introducing Year 10 students to particle physics, science and engineering held annually at St Paul's School. This course is organised and run in partnership between St Paul's School, the Institute of Physics, and Queen Mary's Particle Physics Research Centre.

Year 12 Work Experience Week

A free, week-long, non-residential programme for Year 12 students wishing to gain experience of what it's like to work in academia. This programme ran for the first time in 2024.

Open days

The School of Physical and Chemical Sciences participates in the University-wide open days in October and June each year. At these events you can meet academic and student support staff, see our lecturers in action and take a tour of our facilities.

Taster days

Students who want to know more about a Physics or Chemistry degree might find it useful to attend a subject specific session before they apply. Find out more about subject specific sessions for all the courses across Queen Mary.

Public events

The School of Physical and Chemical Sciences gets involved with several public events and activities to present and discuss the research being undertaken. These are often suitable for school students with an interest in physics.

Outreach across Queen Mary

Queen Mary supports a broad range of activities aimed at maximising the opportunities available to potential students. These include more general opportunities, resources, and information in the outreach content hub.
