Paul Shepherd has won one of this year’s Drapers Company prizes for outstanding academic achievement for his Astrophysics MSc, which included his dissertation on “Triple System Modelling for Wide Binary GR vs MOND Investigations”.  The prizes are awarded annually by the University for top academic performance across its postgraduate degrees. Paul is now continuing his studies as a PhD student in QMUL’s Astronomy Unit.

Paul commented: “As a (very) mature student I was really impressed with the open mindedness displayed through the Queen Mary admissions process as regards a diversity characteristic that perhaps attracts fewer headlines; namely “age”. I was made to feel very welcome by the astronomy unit staff and my fellow students and thoroughly enjoyed my MSc experience. So much so that I have taken on a PhD project at Queen Mary to carry on the work I started at MSc level. My astronomy unit MSc cohort contained four students aged above fifty years old out of a total of about thirty-five students. I think that really demonstrated Queen Mary’s diversity policy in action.”
