IPA2014
Interplay of Particle and Astroparticle Physics
IPA 2014
18th-22nd August 2014
Meeting web page: The indico page for this meeting can be found at https://indico.ph.qmul.ac.uk/indico/conferenceDisplay.py?confId=1
Location: This workshop will be held at the Queen Mary University of London Mile End Road campus. This is a stones throw from the financial hubs of London, the City and London's dock lands, and a 15 minute underground journey away from London's West End.
Synopsis:
There are a number of unresolved issues in Modern Physics today. Over the last few decades our understanding of the Universe has been transformed, we now believe that Dark Energy is the dominant contribution with a significant contribution from some as yet unidentified form of Dark Matter. The remaining 5% of the universe consists of familiar matter: quarks, leptons and bosons.
Cosmological, astronomical and particle fields have a number of unresolved issues, and the underlying concepts in these fields overlap in extreme regimes. For example particle physics does not yet provide a solution to the Universal matter-antimatter asymmetry, naturalness arguments motivating a 1TeV scale for the possible discovery of new particles at the LHC have yet to yield evidence for new physics, and such scales are well below limits set by precision interferometry of quark flavour changing interactions. Confirmation of a particle identification for Dark Matter is still eluding us, so one can not rule out more mundane solutions, and so on.
The aim of this workshop is to discuss these potentially related areas to explore possible correlations between observables that may ultimately lead to a deeper understanding of nature.

Social events:
There will be three social events in order to provide a stimulating environment for workshop delegates to think and discuss ideas during the week. The first of these will be a welcome reception held in College on the evening of the first day (Monday). On the Wednesday afternoon of the workshop there will be a sight seeing tour of the Tower of London for delegates who are interested in taking in one of the highlights of the city, while at the same time providing a culturally invigorating setting for further discussion. The final social event will be the workshop dinner at a venue yet to be determined.
