List of Student Experience Safety Representatives (by Department) 

 

The duties/responsibilities of Safety Reps include the following

  • Ensuring that risk assessments for their local activities are being completed. If they are not, to arrange for this to be completed (ensuring they request support from Hassan/Chris if required).
  • Ensuring findings and actions of any inspections or audits that relate to their area are progressed and completed and then report back to Hassan/Chris with updates.
  • Ensuring that any significant H&S issues or concerns raised/identified are brought to Chris/Hassan’s attention so that they can be addressed and resolved.
  • Monitoring their local first aid and fire marshal provisions and if they are not sufficient, notifying Chris/Hassan so that appropriate arrangements can be made to ensure that the Directorate has adequate cover in place for emergencies.
  • Assisting in checking local first aid kits and reporting back to Chris/Hassan that they have been checked or if additional items are required.
  • Cascading H&S-related information to their departments.
  • Collating and sending local records to Chris/Hassan as required so that we can collate the information for the whole Directorate (i.e training records).
  • Ensuring local incidents are reported and notifying HSD to make them aware of the incident.
  • Producing termly report of H&S matters of significance in their areas for the Student Experience Health, Safety and Security Management Committee.

Student Experience Safety Coordinators

 

Responsibilities/Duties

  • Be fully familiar with the Queen Mary Health & Safety Policy, Framework and Plan, emergency procedures and all Student Experience health and safety policies and procedures, and shall assist the Director in ensuring that they are applied.
  • Liaise with the Health and Safety Directorate (HSD) in matters concerning health, safety and emergency procedures in the Directorate.
  • Undertake health, safety and fire training as recommended by HSD.
  • Ensure that health and safety reports and information are disseminated to appropriate members of staff and students in the Directorate.
  • Advise and assist in ensuring that adequate precautions are taken in relation to both existing special hazards and those about to be introduced.
  • Ensure, in liaison with HSD that the first aid provision in the Directorate is adequate.
  • Ensure in conjunction with HSD (Fire Team) that there are a sufficient number of fire marshals for the Directorate.
  • Ensure in conjunction with the HSD (Fire Team) that suitable provision is made for the emergency evacuation of any disabled persons in the Directorate.
  • Advise and assist in ensuring that all plant and equipment their areas is maintained in a safe condition (in liaison with the Estates and Facilities Directorate).
  • Advise and assist in ensuring that staff and students are informed, instructed, trained and supervised to avoid risks to their health and safety.
  • Assist in ensuring that records of safety training, including induction and fire safety training, are kept for each member of staff and post-graduate student.
  • Assist in ensuring that, where induction and safety training is provided to under graduate students, a record of who has received the training is made and kept on file whilst the student is at Queen Mary University of London.
  • Advise and assist in ensuring that, where necessary, statutory occupational health and safety records are maintained.
  • Advise and assist in ensuring that a high standard of housekeeping is maintained in the Directorate.
  • Advise and assist in ensuring that appropriate personal protective clothing and equipment is available and used.
  • Seek to ensure that dangerous occurrences and accidents are reported to HSD on the appropriate form, that incidents are investigated and, where relevant, remedial actions are taken to prevent a recurrence.
  • Advise and assist in ensuring that systematic health and safety monitoring is carried out, through regular safety inspections and safety audits.
  • Identify and resolve unsafe or unhealthy conditions or work practices.
  • Ensure that suitable and sufficient risk assessments are undertaken, recorded and that identified control measures have been put in place.
  • Advise and assist in the preparation of an annual review of Directorate health and safety procedures and performance.
