Peer to Peer Support and Mentoring

Peer to peer support – Get support

Our peer support programmes allow you to gain advice and support from students. Trained students use their experience to help you. At Queen Mary, we have programmes to help you settle into university life, to developing your academic skills as well as to support specific groups of students.

  • What: PASS is an accredited peer learning programme which aims to help you build academic competency through small group discussion and study.
  • Who: first year undergraduate students in 15 schools.
  • How do I take part: Click the Mentees Tab on our PASS pages for details of your School’s weekly session/s or email pass@scheme@qmul.ac.uk.
  • What: The Buddy Scheme is here to help you to settle into life at Queen Mary. Our mentors can make sure you meet new people from your course and Queen Mary in general, learn more about campus and the area, get involved with the Students' Union and all the great events they host and what support is available to you if you need it.
  • Who: first year undergraduate students based at the Mile End Road campus.
  • How do I take part: Connect to a mentor via our Vygo platform (sign up with your Queen Mary email address).
  • What: Level Up is a pilot mentoring scheme designed for students returning for their second year at Queen Mary and who may find that a little extra support from a peer could help them smoothly settle back into university life after the summer break. On the scheme, you will connect with a fellow student who will act as your mentor, sharing their own experiences.
  • Who: This year, we are offering a small group of mentees the chance to take part within the Level Up scheme. These students will be sent an invitation.
  • How do I take part: If you have been included in our pilot group, you’ll be sent a link to join the Vygo platform.
  • What: Peer Led Team Learning (PLTL) is an active learning pedagogy that takes a workshop-based approach to student learning.
  • Who: It is currently offered in three schools at Queen Mary.
  • How: If your school is involved, they will provide more information.
  • What: Online support where you can connect with peers, use self-help resources, joint groups or take self-assessments to support your wellbeing.
  • Who: All students.
  • How: Sign up to Togetherall using your Queen Mary e-mail address.

Medicine and Dentistry – Families

BL Families is a way of life at Barts and The London Students' Association. Designed to be a scheme that helps first year students settle in and get access to the knowledge and experience of peers in more senior years (aka steal their notes).  Current BL Students (the “parents”) are paired with new BL students (the “children”) to help new BL students settle in.

IHSE Peer Support Network

The Institute of Health Sciences Education (IHSE) will be overseeing a peer support network with an organisation called Being Well in Suffolk (BWIS). A network of students will receive 6 training sessions in order that they can then support each other on an equal level basis.

Get involved – Become a Mentor

Providing peer to peer support is a great way to improve your employability skills. Most of our schemes can also be accredited so this appears on your HEAR, your digital transcript.  You’ll also be giving back to your community by sharing your experiences and providing help to other students.  Training and support will be provided.

Recruitment for the schemes varies but is usually approximately April – July.
