Our relationship with food and eating can be complicated, influenced by many factors including societal expectations around food and the influence of media expectations around appearance. We may notice that our eating is influenced by our emotions or mood and this can be a natural response as food can provide comfort and pleasure. However, if our relationship with food becomes particularly complicated, stressful or unmanageable, it may be helpful to seek support.
Disordered eating, or an eating disorder can be linked to an underlying emotional or psychological issue. The underlying issues are not necessarily traumatic incidents but may be fairly commonly experienced problems that have built up over a period of time.

Beat provides information and guidance about eating disorders. They have helplines, online support and a UK-wide network of self-help groups to help adults and young people beat their eating disorders.
