Dr Zahra Raisi-Estabragh wins prestigious Royal Society of Medicine President's Gold Medal in Cardiology

Congratulations to Dr Zahra Raisi-Estabragh who was recently awarded the Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) President’s Gold Medal in Cardiology in recognition of her work developing cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) radiomics as a novel imaging biomarker.

Specialist registrars in cardiology from across the UK were invited to present abstracts of their original research at the annual Royal Society of Medicine Cardiology President’s Prize meeting on Monday 14th June.

Dr Zahra Raisi-Estabragh, British Heart Foundation Clinical Research Training Fellow and Cardiology speciality trainee at the William Harvey Research Institute, presented her work on development of a new image analysis toolkit called CMR radiomics. This novel technique allows extraction of very detailed information about the shape and texture of the heart from heart MRI scans, beyond what is available from conventional image analysis, and could improve our ability to identify important diseases

On receiving the highly competitive RSM President’s Gold Medal in Cardiology, Dr Zahra Raisi-Estabragh said: “It was an honour to present my research in the competition and I am immensely proud to be granted the winner. I would like to thank my amazing mentors Professor Steffen Petersen, Professor Patricia Munroe, and Professor Nick Harvey and my excellent collaborators at the University of Barcelona led by Professor Karim Lekadir. I am also very grateful to the UK Biobank and VOLUMES resource organisers and participants, without whom this work would not be possible and, of course, to the British Heart Foundation for funding my research.”

Steffen Petersen, Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at Queen Mary University, said: “Dr Raisi-Estabragh is an exceptionally talented clinical academic with huge potential as a future leader in the field. She presented an impressive body of work which was of outstandingly high quality. This important achievement is a testament to her talent, dedication, and leadership.”

Nick Harvey, Professor of Rheumatology and Clinical Epidemiology at the MRC LEU, University of Southampton, said: “I would like to sincerely congratulate Dr Raisi-Estabragh on winning the highly competitive and prestigious RSM Cardiology President’s prize for her work developing CMR radiomics as a novel imaging biomarker. She is an exceptionally talented young clinical academic who undoubtedly has a bright, and highly productive, future ahead of her.”

Patricia Munroe, Professor of Molecular Medicine at Queen Mary University of London, added: “I congratulate Zahra on winning this prestigious award. During her PhD studies she has developed a commendable body of work developing CMR radiomics as a new biomarker, her research demonstrates its potential utility as an additional biomarker for predicting cardiovascular outcomes, this is a very exciting area of research.”
