Profile

I am Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry and was formerly Head of the Centre for Psychiatry in the Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine at Barts and the London School of Medicine, Queen Mary University of London between 1999 and 2014. Until 2014 I was Chair of the International Commission on the Biological Effects of Noise and directed the European Network on Noise and Health. Between 2014 and 2018 I chaired the Guideline Development Group for the WHO Environmental Noise Guidelines for the European Region.

I was previously Co-Director of the Whitehall II Study at UCL, led on the mental health component of the biomedical follow up of the 1958 Birth cohort and am particularly interested in social inequalities and mental health. I am interested in prevention of mental ill health at work and led the GEM Study (Guided E-learning for Managers). Until 2014 I worked as a consultant psychiatrist in psychiatric rehabilitation in the East London NHS Foundation Trust.

Research

Research Interests:

My research interests include the effects of the physical and social environment on mental health. I carried out a programme of research on the psychosocial work environment and social support as predictors of mental ill-health, well-being and sickness absence.
