CHILL (Children’s Health in London and Luton)

Air pollution is harmful to children's lung growth and brain development. By tracking the growth of over 3,000 children in London and Luton, the CHILL study aims to find out whether reducing air pollution from traffic improves children's health.

Children’s Health in London and Luton (CHILL) aims to independently evaluate whether the Ultra Low Emission zone is effective at reducing air pollution, and improving children's lung growth and respiratory health.

Air pollution stunts children's lung growth and damages brain development. London's Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) was introduced in 2019 to reduce air pollution caused by traffic in Central London. In August 2023, it was extended to span all London boroughs.

The Children's Health in London and Luton (CHILL) study aims to find out whether reducing air pollution from traffic improves children's lung growth, respiratory health, cognitive development and physical activity. To do this, CHILL recruited over 3,000 primary school-aged children in London and Luton. By comparing children's growth in London and Luton, the study team can test if children’s development is different for children living in the ULEZ.
