Case Study: Teaching Anatomy using VR

Geetika Ail - Institute of Health Sciences Education

Using virtual reality to teach anatomy could be invaluable resource for learners when they may not have access to cadaveric resources.

Dr Geetika Ail, Anatomy Lecturer collaborated with the Learning Innovation Team and Dr Paula Vickerton, Director of Anatomy, Deputy head of Year 1 MBBS, to conduct a study. The aim was evaluating the effectiveness of virtual reality in anatomy teaching, comparing it with the traditional approach of using prosection materials. 92 MBBS students from Year 1 and 2 were selected for this study, which was designed into a revision session for the students conducted in the lab.

The project used Oculus i- VR headsets, the Human Anatomy VR™ application, and prosection materials.

An article was published: A comparison of virtual reality anatomy models to prosections in stationā€based anatomy teaching

The “Anatomy studies” project was funded by the Westfield grant.
