Yes. If you have been issued Tier 4 immigration permission you can enrol on the studies associated with the CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) you used in your immigration application.

You will need to present the following documentation at enrolment:

Evidence of your identity

You will need to show:

  • valid passport

Evidence of your immigration permission

If you applied outside of the UK and were granted immigration permission of six months or less, you will need to show:

You must collect your BRP from the post office within 10 days of arriving in the UK or the expiry date of the sticker in your passport (whichever is later) and send a high quality photo/scan of both sides of your BRP to visaverification@qmul.ac.uk. If you do not do this, your registration and enrolment will be terminated and you will cease to be a student at QMUL.

If you applied inside the UK you will need to show:
  • your biometric residence permit (plastic card)

Please refer to full BRP guidance.

If you applied for your current immigration permission inside the UK, you do not need to show evidence of the date that you arrived in the UK.

I hold valid QMUL Tier 4 immigration permission but it was issued for a programme of studies I have already completed, can I enrol?

Yes. If you have already completed a programme of studies at QMUL and your Tier 4 immigration permission for these studies has not yet expired, you can enrol.

You must submit a Tier 4 immigration application before your current immigration permission expires and within six weeks of enrolling (whichever is sooner).

If you do not submit evidence that you have submitted a Tier 4 application (your "document check list") to theQMUL Immigration Compliance Team before your current immigration permission expires or within six weeks of enrolling (whichever is sooner), your registration and enrolment will be terminated.

Enrolment Risk Waiver

By enrolling without immigration permission that covers the whole of your programme of studies, you are confirming that you understand that:

  • If you do not provide evidence to the QMUL Immigration Compliance team that shows you have made an immigration application within 6 weeks of enrolment or the date that your current immigration permission expires (whichever is sooner), your registration and enrolment will be terminated.
  • If you submit an immigration application but this (and any subsequent in-time administrative review) is not successful, you will have to interrupt or withdraw from your studies and return home.
  • If your registration and enrolment is terminated because you have not provided evidence that you have made an immigration application or you have to interrupt or withdraw from your studies because your immigration application is not successful, you will be held liable for the fees for your programme for the whole academic year and you will not be entitled to any refund.

If you are not prepared to accept this risk, you should not enrol. If you do not wish to accept this risk, you may be able to ask the QMUL Admission Office to defer your place until the next intake.

I am a non-EEA national living in the UK and I do not have a student visa or a Tier 4 General Student visa, can I enrol?

It depends. If your immigration permission does not prohibit study at QMUL, you will be able to enrol.

Types of immigration permission that would prohibit you from studying at QMUL include:

  • Any type of visitor visa (except Short-Term Student)
  • Any Tier 4 student immigration permission which you applied for on or after 05 October 2009 to study at another institution (not QMUL) where you are not continuing your studies at that institution.

Examples of immigration permission which would allow you to study at QMUL:

  • Immigration permission as a dependant (husband/wife/partner/child) of someone in the UK
  • Immigration permission under Tiers 1, 2 or 5 of the Points Based System

You will need to present the following documentation at enrolment

Updates about your immigration permission

Shortly before the expiry of your current immigration permission, we will write to you to ask you to provide evidence that you have made an immigration application that will allow you to continue to stay in the UK and study at QMUL. If you fail to respond to these requests, your registration and enrolment will be terminated.

I am a non-EEA national living in the UK as the family member of an EEA or Swiss national

The easiest way to prove your right to live, work and study in the UK is with an optional permit or Residence card issued by the Home Office. This means you can show us either:

  • Your passport with a valid 6-month EEA Family Permit or Residence card sticker; or
  • Your passport and separate biometrics 5-year Residence card or Permanent Residence card

If your Permit has expired, you can apply for a Residence card if you wish. An EEA Family Permit is free if you apply before you travel to the UK. A Residence card or Permanent Residence card application costs £65 per person.

A permit or Residence card is optional for EEA/Swiss nationals and their family members. So we will also accept alternative evidence of your right to be in the UK. You will need to show us all the documents you would need for a Residence card application:

  • The EEA or Swiss national’s passport or national ID card; and
  • Your passport; and
  • Evidence that the EEA/Swiss national is studying, working, self-employed or self-sufficient; and
  • Evidence that you are their family member.  If they are studying, you must their spouse or civil partner, or their dependent child, or their spouse or civil partner’s dependent child, or their “extended family member” as defined at https://www.gov.uk/apply-for-a-uk-residence-card/eligibility.  If the EEA/Swiss national is working, self-employed or self-sufficient, you can also be their (or their spouse or civil partner’s) grandchild who is under 21 or dependent, or their (or their spouse or civil partner’s) dependent parent or grandparent.

We will also accept:

I have an immigration application pending in another category (e.g. dependant, Tier 1, Indefinite Leave to Remain), can I still enrol?

It depends. If your previous immigration permission did not prohibit you from studying at QMUL and you submitted your immigration application before that immigration permission expired, you will be able to enrol and continue to study while your immigration application is to be decided (including any in-time appeal or administrative review).

You will need to present the following documentation at enrolment.

Evidence of your identity

You will need to show:

  • valid passport; or
  • valid travel document

Evidence of your previous immigration permission

  • valid immigration sticker, stamp or certificate in your passport or travel document; or
  • valid biometric identity document confirming your immigration status (such as a Biometric Residence Permit or an Asylum Registration Card)

Evidence that you have submitted an immigration application

You will need to show:

  • if you have submitted an on-line application, your "document check-list"
  • if you have submitted a paper application, evidence of the date you posted your application to the Home Office (e.g. your Special Delivery receipt from the Post Office) and the letter from the Home Office confirming receipt of your application.

Evidence of the date that you arrived in the UK:

  • if you entered using an e-gate or via the Republic of Ireland you will need to bring your flight ticket/boarding pass (original, print at home or mobile); or
  • if you did not enter using an e-gate and did not enter via the Republic of Ireland, you can show the UK Immigration Officer's date stamp in your passport.

If you applied for your current immigration permission inside the UK, you do not need to show evidence of the date that you arrived in the UK.

Enrolment Risk Waiver

By enrolling without immigration permission that covers the whole of your programme of studies, you are confirming that you understand that:

  • If your immigration application (and any subsequent in-time administrative review) is not successful, you will have to interrupt or withdraw from your studies and return home.
  • If you have to interrupt or withdraw from your studies because your immigration application is not successful, you will be held liable for the fees for your programme for the whole academic year and you will not be entitled to any refund.

If you are not prepared to accept this risk, you should not enrol. If you do not wish to accept this risk, you may be able to ask the QMUL Admission Office to defer your place until the next intake.

Updates about your immigration application

We will periodically contact you to request that you update your student record with the progress of your immigration application. You should respond to these requests even if you are just confirming that you have not had a response from the Home Office. If you fail to respond to these requests, your registration and enrolment will be terminated.

If you do not have your passport or travel document and evidence of your immigration permission because you have already sent these to the Home Office, we will accept high quality colour photocopies of your documents. If you are providing a copy of a biometric residence permit or asylum registration card, please make sure you have copies of both sides.

If you did not take high quality photocopies of your documents before you sent them and can't obtain copies from elsewhere (e.g. from your previous academic institution), the QMUL Immigration Compliance Team may, with your permission, be able to request copies from the Home Office. Please note, requesting documents from the Home Office may take some time and this could delay your enrolment.

I hold Short-Term Student immigration permission, can I enrol on this even though my course is no longer than six months?

No. If your course is longer than six months that you must obtain a CAS and apply for Tier 4 immigration permission to enrol.

I hold Standard Visitor immigration permission for the purpose of an academic visit, can I enrol?

No. Standard Visitor immigration permission prohibits studies. The purpose of this route for academic visits is to enable established academic staff (typically post-doctoral researcher, readers, lecturers and professors) to take part in research collaborations and exchanges. It is not intended for the use of students.

I am not sure if my immigration permission allows me to study at QMUL

If you have read the information above and are not sure if your immigration permission allows you to study, please contact the QMUL Immigration Compliance Team

In your email, please include a copy of your passport details page and a copy of your most recent immigration sticker, stamp, card or document from the Home Office confirming your status.

If you hold more than one nationality, please provide evidence for each nationality you hold.

If you have an in-time immigration application, which is still to be decided (including any in-time appeal or administrative review), please provide evidence of this (e.g. correspondence from the Home Office or Tribunals Service).

Original evidence of your academic qualifications

If you have not already provided us with a verifiable, colour copy of the required original qualification certificates, you may be required to bring the originals along to your enrolment session. Whether you need to bring original documents and what documents we need to see at enrolment will be communicated to you through the pre-enrolment process.

If your qualifications they are not in English, the original must be accompanied by a fully certified translation by a professional translator/translation company. This translation must include:

  • details of the translator/translation company's credentials; and
  • confirmation that it is an accurate translation of the original document; and
  • the translator/translation company's contact details

It must also be dated and include the original signature of the translator or an authorised official of the translation company.

If you have not yet been issued your certificates at the time of enrolment, please bring a notification slip or pass list.

It is essential that you provide original documentation where possible; if unavailable, we can accept photocopies that have been stamped and signed by the awarding institution or body.

If you have any questions regarding your qualifications, please contact the Admissions Office on +44 (0)20 7882 5511 for UG students and +44 (0)20 7882 5533 for PG students, or by email: admissions@qmul.ac.uk.

This guidance is very important as the university may NOT be able to fully enrol you if you do NOT present us with your original documentation at the point of enrolment or before.

ATAS for non-EEA nationals

If you are from outside the European Economic Area and Switzerland and are studying certain postgraduate and research programmes (and undergraduate programmes leading to a postgraduate qualification), you will need to obtain ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) clearance before you can enrol on your programme of studies. If you will be applying for Tier 4 (General) Student immigration permission, you will need to obtain ATAS clearance before requesting a CAS from the university.

You should not need to provide a copy of your ATAS clearance certificate at enrolment as this will be checked by our Admissions Office before you are cleared to enrol.

For more information on ATAS see: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/academic-technology-approval-scheme
