Professor Márta Korbonits is a leading clinician scientist on the clinical, translational and experimental aspects of pituitary tumorigenesis and familial isolated pituitary adenomas. Furthermore, she has pioneered work on the metabolic effects of various hormones. Her strength is the ability to set up basic science experiments based on key clinical questions and then translate these back to clinical studies. In addition, she looks after patients with endocrine diseases at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, undertakes wide-ranging teaching and supervisory activities and leads a Clinical Doctoral Programme and co-leads the Clinical Academic Training School at Queen Mary University of London. She is currently President of the Society for Endocrinology.

Professor Márta Korbonits, said: “I am absolutely delighted to receive this Translational Medicine award. As an academic clinician engaged in research, I find myself at the intersection of clinical science and basic research. I feel greatest excitement, when a clinical question can be resolved through basic research experiments, or conversely, when a basic research finding proves relevant in the field of clinical medicine.

“My accomplishments owe much to outstanding work of my trainees and the collaborative efforts of my colleagues. I hope that our work can serve as an inspiration for other colleagues and students alike, encouraging them to embark on various translational projects. Such endeavours are absolutely crucial for advancing our understanding of medicine in the future.”

Endocrinologists are scientists and medical doctors who specialize in unravelling the mysteries of hormone disorders to care for patients and cure diseases. The field has achieved breakthroughs in scientific discoveries and clinical care benefiting people with hundreds of common or rare conditions, including thyroid disorders, metabolic disorders, obesity, hormone-related cancers, growth problems, osteoporosis and infertility.
