WISE@QMUL Hybrid Seminar with Ana Flores Reis 25 January 2023
We are excited to announce that we will be running a hybrid seminar series this year, kicking off in February with a talk from Ana Flores Reis the QMUL Sexual Assault & Harassment Adviser.
Do you know what to do if you witness harassment in the workplace? Do you know how to disclose sexual harassment or misconduct? Do you want to better understand what types of harassment or abuse might occur in the workplace?
This seminar will cover types of harassment and misconduct, guidance on how to make disclosures both formally and informally, and discussion on how to make the workplace as safe and inclusive as possible to all. This 40-minute talk will be followed by a Q&A plus time to network afterwards. We encourage students/staff of all genders and levels of seniority to attend either online or in-person.

WISE@QMUL Festival of Communities 2022 8 August 2022
On Saturday 11th June 2022, 8 of our committee members headed out for a sunny day at the Festival of Communities in Stepney Green Park. We were all very excited to finally be able to attend an in-person event as a team. We found our stall and immediately set to work decorating it with some WISE@QMUL posters and beautiful handmade origami.

WISE@QMUL International Women’s Day 2021 Conference Event Summary 6 April 2021
We celebrated International Women’s Day through a two-day virtual conference on 25th and 26th March 2021, with the themes of ‘Ethnic Minority Women in STEMM’, and ‘Future Directions and Priorities for Women in STEMM’. This was a unique opportunity to challenge existing gender and ethnic disparities in STEMM, whilst celebrating and being inspired by the journeys of role models in the field of science and engineering.

Sheila Gupta studied History and Politics as an undergraduate and has postgraduate qualifications in Management Studies and Human Resource Management. She began her career in Local Government at a time of major policy changes including Compulsory Competitive Tendering and Local Management of Schools, providing her with firsthand experience of managing complex change.

Meet our panelists Dr Danielle Tomasello 3 February 2021
Dr Danielle Tomasello is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, MIT. She has a PhD in Neuroscience, and her current research focuses on Neuroscience and Developmental Biology in Neurodevelopmental Disorders.

Dr Gloria González Aseguinolaza graduated in Biology from the University of the Basque Country and then completed her doctoral thesis at the Center for Biological Research of the Spanish Scientific Research Council, Madrid, under the direction of research professor Vicente Larraga.

Dr Margot Khouri is an immunologist, with a speciality in vaccines and cell and gene therapy. After a Master’s degree in France, she did a PhD at Barts Cancer Institute, which she describes as an eye opening experience into the world of academia and research.

Vinita Marwaha Madill is a space engineer and Founder of Rocket Women. She studied Mathematics and Physics with Astrophysics at King’s College London and went on to gain a master’s degrees in Space Management from the International Space University (ISU) and in Astronautics and Space Engineering from Cranfield University, UK.

Dr Sara Bandres-Ciga, is a molecular geneticist whose research interests are primarily focused in understanding how genetic variation affects neurodegenerative diseases. Her career started with a PharmD degree, followed by a Neuroscience MSc, and lastly a PhD (Hons) in Genetics from the University of Granada, Spain.

Atiya Sarmin is a 4th year PhD student on the MRC DTP programme, completing her research at the Blizard Institute which focuses on Developing Advanced Models of Cutaneous Wound Healing using 3D Bioprinting. Prior to this, she completed a BSc in Biomedical Sciences at The University of Southampton before completing an MRes in Cancer Biology at Imperial College London.

Dr Rosalind Hannen is the Founder and CEO of Keratify. She completed her BBSRC-Unilever PhD studentship in dermatoendocrinology at the Blizard Institute, Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) in 2009 and actively created all her subsequent postdoctoral research positions by personally writing and winning grant funding, pitching to businesses and engaging in all types of funding opportunities.

Zeb Farooq is a community integration leader who has spent the last fifteen years promoting inclusivity and cohesiveness in society. He has done this in an exclusively voluntary capacity, most recently as a member of the Prince’s Trust North West Regional Leadership Group. His humble background growing up in inner-city Manchester gave him the personal motivation to succeed, champion important causes and inspire others.

Nirmala Rao is the Vice Chancellor of the Asian University for Women (AUW), Chittagong, Bangladesh. Prior to joining AUW, she was Pro-Director of the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, between 2008 and 2016, and Pro-Warden for Academic Affairs at Goldsmiths College, University of London.
