‘Operating over syntactic Alternatives’ workshop with Professor Michael Wagner

When: Tuesday, May 23, 2023, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Where: Arts Two 3.20 (hybrid), Mile End Campus

We are delighted to be joined by Professor Michael Wagner, who will be leading a workshop entitled ‘Operating over syntactic Alternatives’.

Several syntactic and semantic puzzles appear to become more tractable if grammatical objects can denote expressions or sets of expressions and if grammar can abstract and operate over such sets. Looking at some case studies, including echo questions and disjunction, we will see how syntactic alternative projection in particular can make sense of metalinguistic uses of these constructions. We will also look at evidence that syntactic projection may in fact be at play in non-metalinguistic uses of these constructions and might in fact be ubiquitous in grammar.

Visit https://www.qmul.ac.uk/sllf/linguistics/events/upcoming-events/ for more workshops from Prof. Wagner throughout the week.

This event will be a hybrid event and details for attending online will be sent to registered attendees closer to the day.
