When: Monday, May 22, 2023, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PMWhere: Arts Two 3.20 (hybrid), Mile End Campus
We are delighted to be joined by Professor Michael Wagner, who will be leading a workshop entitled ‘Projecting syntactic alternatives’.
Rooth (1985, 1992) analyses prosodic focus as a marker introducing a set of alternative semantic meanings. In this workshop, we will look at evidence that prosodic focus may in fact rely on a different mechanism of alternative generation: focused constituents introduce a set of structural alternatives that ‘project’ in a pointwise way in syntax to generate sets of larger linguistic expressions. The analysis relates to claims that focus substitutions are structural (Katzir 2007, Fox & Katzir 2011) but goes beyond in also assuming that projection is syntactic.

This event will be a hybrid event and details for attending online will be sent to registered attendees closer to the day.
