When: Wednesday, May 24, 2023, 2:00 PM - 4:00 PMWhere: Arts Two 3.20 (hybrid), Mile End Campus
We are delighted to be joined by Professor Michael Wagner, who will be leading a workshop entitled ‘Syntactic projection as an abbreviatory device’.
German grammarians widely consider German is the ‘Gender gap’ in its various guises (Binnen-I, Genderstern, …) as a violation of basic principles of German or even Universal Grammar. A closer look as well as experimental evidence reveals that 'gender gap' is a surprising but well-behaved form of reduced coordination. It's pronunciation with a glottal stop is neither an invention of feminist or gender-inclusive language activism nor an unnatural aberration of grammar but part of a broader generalization about the phonology of coordination.

This event will be a hybrid event and details for attending online will be sent to registered attendees closer to the day.
